Welcome to the Academy of Wellness and Human Development (WHD) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences!

Established as part of the recent consolidation of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences, our Academy brings together the strengths and expertise of three dynamic departments: Department of Education and Psychology (formerly named Education Studies), Department of Sports Sciences and Health (formerly named Sports, Physical Education, and Health), and Department of Social Work. This strategic integration fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, enriching our research, learning and teaching, and community engagement.

At WHD, we are committed to advancing knowledge and nurturing talents in areas essential to human well-being and holistic development through innovative transdisciplinary research and thoughtfully-designed academic programmes. We endeavour to prepare our students to become skilled practitioners, compassionate educators, insightful researchers, and proactive leaders who are ready to make impactful contributions to society.

Each department within WHD offers distinctive strengths and expertise:

  • Department of Education and Psychology: Dedicated to nurturing effective educators and professional psychologists, this department emphasizes research-driven teaching, cutting-edge research in educational innovations, neuroscience and cognition, and psychological well-being.
  • Department of Sports Sciences and Health: Committed to promoting healthy lifestyles, physical wellness, and sports excellence through rigorous research, community outreach, and comprehensive academic programmes that equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in health promotion, coaching, and sports management.
  • Department of Social Work: Dedicated to social justice and community empowerment, this department prepares social work professionals through accredited programmes and impactful research addressing contemporary societal challenges, advocating for vulnerable populations, and fostering social cohesion.

As Academy Director, it is my privilege to invite you to explore our diverse academic offerings, engage with our ground-breaking research, and partner with us in shaping healthier, more inclusive and resilient communities.

We warmly welcome students, scholars, practitioners, and community stakeholders to join us in our collective pursuit of excellence and positive social impact.
