14 August 2020

PhD student Tsang Nga-yi, Afra received the Tianjiang Cup Li Shizhen Youth Outstanding Thesis Award in The 16th International Postgraduate Symposium on Chinese Medicine 2020 (IPSCM 2020) held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on 14 August.

Afra has been engaged in research on antiviral natural products under the supervision of Professor Zhang Hongjie, Director of the Teaching and Research Division.  In the conference, she presented her research work with the topic “potent Anti-Ebola Polyphenols Identified from Maesa Perlarius”.  Over 500 extracts of the medicinal plants collected in the Lingnan region were tested against the infection of Ebola pseudotyped particles.  Maesa perlarius was identified as an active plant lead.  Several anti-Ebola active polyphenols were then characterised form the medicinal plant extract.

Organised by the universities in Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore and supported by Modernized Chinese Medicine International Association, IPSCM provided the postgraduates with an opportunity to share their research advances in the field of Chinese medicine with budding researchers around the world as well as increased their enthusiasm for Chinese medicine research studies.
