Jointly organised by the Research Management Office and Virtual Exchange Centre of HKBU SCE, the 3rd Bi-annual E-learning and Virtual Exchange (VE) Workshop, Impact Research for Education 4.0: Teaching and Learning Methodologies to Assure Future Ready Graduates, was successfully concluded via Zoom with a hundred of participants on 29 Apr 2024.

Presented by Prof. Keiko IKEDA, a Professor in the Division of International Affairs at Kansai University, the workshop aims to provide the participants with a deeper understanding on the digitally enhanced education, and also to introduce the framework of education 4.0. In the workshop, Prof. Keiko IKEDA shared her wealth of knowledge on the two thematically interested areas, which are “The Social Interoperation & Its Dynamics” and “The Impact Research for Education 4.0: Understanding Knowledge”.

In the first discussion area, Prof. Keiko IKEDA held her belief that the impacts of COVID results in the permanent changes on international education in digital era, which leads to the formation of virtual internationalisation that comprises of several modalities, including international online education, virtual exchange program, cross-cultural online learning, digital mobility, global classroom and virtual internships, and COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) is one of the examples.

To give a better idea on how the digitally mediated social interaction works, Prof. Keiko IKEDA shared a research case on the COIL interaction on Metaverse to showcase how the users interact and engage with each other in a three-dimensional virtual world. “The avatar represents users in Metaverse, which enables a wide range of facial expressions and body languages that can mimic real life interactions more closely like what you saw in physical interaction.” Prof. Keiko IKEDA said.

In the second discussion area, Prof. Keiko IKEDA introduced the framework of education 4.0. “This educational approach includes updating curricular that encompasses the technologies and changing teaching methods using technology to enhance university experience.” Prof. Keiko IKEDA added that there is a set of skills that are very important components in education, which are global citizenship skills, innovation and creativity skills, technology skills and interpersonal skills. She believed that students could experience these components through COIL, in which it is currently gaining significance. 

After the insightful sharing of Prof. Keiko IKEDA, it aroused numerous questions raised from the participants that indicates the keen interests among the audience on this new teaching and learning pedagogy.

Ms. Anna Yuen, the Person-in-charge of Virtual Exchange Centre and the moderator of this workshop, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Keiko IKEDA for her inspiring sharing, which benefited the participants greatly by strengthening their knowledge on the education 4.0 framework and the digitally enhanced education.
