Abstract:

Europe, as a world region, is a major player on the global higher education landscape and one that stands out for its unique initiatives to foster regional cooperation and advance internationalisation. Last year the European Association for International Education (EAIE) released the eagerly awaited third edition of the EAIE Barometer report. With 2817 responses from 46 countries across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the report offers a comprehensive view of the health and vitality of internationalisation in Europe from the perspective of frontline professionals in the field. This keynote will zoom in on Barometer data linked to digitalisation and virtual internationalisation activities. Combined with personal insights from a global career in international higher education, some key questions will be explored that resonate well beyond Europe: In what ways are the roles of international higher education professionals changing? What skills and topics require specific attention by higher education institutions, and where can we find opportunities/challenges linked to digitalisation?
