HKBU delegation strengthens European partnerships in art tech, science, and cross-disciplinary innovation

20 Feb 2026

To forge key partnerships to advance high-impact research and innovation, a delegation from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has visited leading institutions in the United Kingdom and Germany in January. The HKBU delegation, led by Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor, and joined by Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer; Ms Nelly Lam, Assistant Director (Strategic Alliance and Promotion) of HKBU's Institute for Innovation and Translation (IIT); Mr Raymond Chan, Assistant Director (Entrepreneurship) of IIT and representatives from the Faculty of Science and the Academy of Visual Arts, focused on fostering collaborations in the dynamic fields of art tech, life sciences, and computer science.

The European tour commenced in London, where the team was warmly received at University College London for an insightful conversation on creative intelligence with Professor Neill Campbell and Professor Lourdes Agapito from the Department of Computer Science. Following this, the delegation met with Professor Jeremy Silver, CEO of The British Library, to explore avenues for collaboration. A tour of the iconic institution inspired new ideas for future partnerships while providing a deeper understanding of its rich history.

Continuing the European tour in Germany, the delegation was welcomed by Mr Alistair Hudson, Director and CEO of ZKM (Center for Art and Media) to exchange insights into art tech research.

The visit's focus then broadened to high-impact science, with the delegation holding a series of key meetings with leaders from Germany's world-renowned research institutes. The team met with Professor Dr Jan S. Hesthaven, President of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and Professor Dr Joachim P. Spatz, Director and Scientific Member of the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research. The visit culminated in forward-looking discussions to expand the scope of collaboration with Professor Gerhard Kramer, Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation of the Technical University of Munich, and Professor Dr Petra Kluger, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology.

The series of fruitful meetings and dynamic exchanges across Europe have laid a robust foundation for pioneering initiatives. HKBU looks forward to the groundbreaking innovations and forward-looking collaborations that will emerge from these partnerships, poised to drive technology translation and generate substantial social impact.
