HKBU presented scholarships to nine elite athletes who were admitted to its undergraduate programmes for the current academic year through the Talented Athletes Direct Admission Scheme (TADAS) at the student-athletes scholarship presentation ceremony held on 23 October.

The scholarship recipients are:  Wushu athlete Tsang Cho-kiu, enrolled in the Bachelor of Science programme; Karatedo athlete Chiu Chun-yin, volleyball player Cheung Chi-wai, athletics athlete Law Ngai-him, rhythmic gymnastics athlete Ma Wai-yin and fencer Tang Cheuk-yin, all enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme; Taekwondo athlete Tung Yui-hang, and para dance sport and wheelchair basketball athlete Matthew Yu Chun-yin, both pursuing the Bachelor of Arts in Sports Industry Management programme; and basketball player Ip Wing-yan, enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Work programme.

Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor, presented certificates to the student athletes. As a token of thanks, the athletes presented a thank you card and a gift to Professor Wai.

In his remarks, Professor Patrick Lau, Associate Director of the Academy of Wellness and Human Development and Professor of the Department of Sport and Health Sciences, said: “The diversity seen through HKBU’s direct admission schemes underscores our dedication to nurturing talent across diverse sporting domains. With over 100 student-athletes welcomed, we reflect Hong Kong’s sporting prowess and our unwavering support for athletes balancing sports and academics.”

Three outstanding student athletes also shared their experiences at the ceremony. Aaron Cheung, founder of the social enterprise “Sportcanheal852” and an HKBU student since 2021/22 academic year, spoke about balancing academics, training, and entrepreneurship. He thanked the University for providing various resources and support for his new career. Kwok Chun-hei, who was admitted to HKBU in 2022/23 academic year, shared the kinds of support the University provides to student athletes, including a flexible study timetable and career path advice — particularly important during his final year. Ip Wing-yan, who was newly admitted to HKBU in 2025/26 academic year, discussed her experience managing training for both the Hong Kong, China team and the University team alongside her studies. One of her methods is using a weekly to-do list to manage her time effectively and complete all tasks efficiently.

In addition to scholarships, HKBU also provides student athletes with comprehensive “3S” support, encompassing study support, sports training and support for personal growth, empowering them to pursue dual excellence in both their academic and sporting endeavours.
