HKBU hosted the annual meeting of the International Advisory Board (IAB) for Graduate Studies on campus on 25 and 26 June. Themed “AI+”, the two-day event served as a dynamic platform for exchanging ideas about the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) in reshaping postgraduate studies, academia and society.
In his welcome remarks, Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, positioned HKBU at the forefront of ethical AI innovation and emphasised the importance of research and innovation, highlighting their transformative potential to shape a better society. He reaffirmed HKBU’s commitment to advancing research that harnesses AI for social good, fostering an academic environment where creativity and technology converge to create impactful solutions for the future.
Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) and Dean of the Graduate School of HKBU, called for international collaboration, noting that each participating university brings unique strengths—from pioneering research to a steadfast commitment to academic excellence—elevating research postgraduate studies to new heights.
The event featured three keynote presentations by Professor Dean Ho, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore; Professor Janice Pan, Director of the Academy of Language and Culture at HKBU; and Dr Liu Dongping, Senior Industry Business Development Manager, Higher Education and Research of Amazon Web Services. These were followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Professor Martin Wong, Provost, along with Professor Liu Jiming, Associate Vice-President (Research Development), and Professor Xu Yida, Professor of the Department of Mathematics at HKBU. Together with the three keynote speakers, they explored how AI and transdisciplinary approaches drive transformative innovation.
Professor Cheung King-ho, Executive Associate Dean of the Graduate School at HKBU, chaired a discussion focused on the ethical dimensions of AI applications in research and explored collaborative opportunities with graduate school leaders from top universities worldwide, including the Australian National University, Cornell University, Fudan University, Imperial College London, Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore, the University of Science and Technology of China, the University of Western Australia, and Zhejiang University.
This year also marked the first time students from IAB institutions presented their work through both posters and an oral competition. Twenty-eight research students showcased their work during the poster presentation, while seven of them also took part in the Student Oral Presentations Competition. Mr Benquan Wang from Nanyang Technological University was awarded the Best Presentation Award.
