HKBU advocates mental health and wellness by engaging the senses

HKBU Office of Student Affairs (SA) organised the “Boost Your Mental Health in 5 Senses” activity under the “Mental Health First Aid Captains” programme. Starting from 27 March, a variety of booths were set up on campus for five consecutive days to promote mental well-being through engaging the five senses — sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.

The booths managed by the Mental Health First Aid captains covered a wide array of activities including making dried flowers and aromatic stones, a live music performance and free cotton candy giveaway. Therapy dogs were also present on campus to interact with the participants. Staff and students could also download a mobile app and join the event via the Metaverse with different mini games promoting emotional and mental health awareness.

The “Mental Health First Aid Captains” programme was launched by the Counselling and Development Centre of SA in 2021. Since then, around 260 student captains have been recruited and trained. They have completed the Mental Health First Aid certificate course and received skills training on how to support others, enabling them to identify the emotional needs of their peers and offer them immediate support.

As the first large-scale mental well-being activity held on campus since the pandemic, a promotional video starring three HKBU students was rolled out to call on their counterparts to join the ranks of the Mental Health First Aid captains and expand the University’s mental health caring network.
