The Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology staged an event on 13 January to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its establishment. The event reviewed the Academy’s activities over the past 10 years and offered an outlook on its future development. The occasion was also marked by the launch of the three volumes of The Collected Works of Jao Tsung-i: Xuantang Anthology, and it featured “Hearing from Within: An Exhibition of Calligraphy and Paintings by Professor Jao Tsung-I”.
Officiating guests of the event included Ms Angeline Yiu Ching-fun, Permanent President of the Jao Studies Foundation; Dr Simon Suen, Founding President of the Development Committee of the Academy; Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU; Professor Albert Chan Sun-chi, President Emeritus of HKBU; and Professor Chen Zhi, Director of the Academy.
In his welcoming address, Professor Alexander Wai said that since its establishment in 2013, the Academy has achieved notable success in areas such as conference organisation, scholarly publications and research collaboration. In his words of encouragement, Professor Albert Chan reminisced about the circumstances that led to the founding of the Academy and the tremendous efforts it has made, and he reaffirmed the value and significance of the Academy.
At the book launch, Professor Wai said the publication of The Collected Works of Jao Tsung-i: Xuantang Anthology is a solid contribution to the wider circulation of Master Jao’s scholarly works, and he expressed his deepest thanks to the Jao Studies Foundation and the Simon Suen Foundation for their support of the venture. In a pre-recorded video, Professor Lee Chack-fan, Chairman of the Management Board of the Jao Studies Foundation, said the publication of the Xuantang Anthology allows the circulation of Master Jao’s scholarly works in China as well as the Western world, which helps promote the development of Jao Studies.
In his vote of thanks, Professor Chen Zhi gave a detailed account of the Academy’s achievements, including the organisation of academic conferences, various collaborations with different organisations, and how the Academy has nurtured future generations of scholars. He also expressed his gratitude to guests and friends who have staunchly supported the growth of the Academy.
