The Department of Marketing of the School of Business co-organised with the Education Bureau and the Consumer Council the first-ever marketing contest for local secondary schools on socially responsible consumption (SRC) which was officially launched on Saturday (25 March).
The contest, targeting high school students, has engaged a total of 60 teams comprising some 300 students from Secondary 3 to 5, who are encouraged to promote SRC as the designated theme. It aims to sow seeds of social responsibility in the younger generation in order to create sustained improvements in the community.
The contest is conducted in three stages: all participants are required to submit a one-minute video to promote SRC in the first round. Teams selected for the second round will be given the opportunity to visit social enterprises and hold talks with the owners and practitioners of the enterprises. This will be followed by a two-day training camp at which teams will give presentations on their randomly assigned topics. Five teams will be shortlisted for the final. The result will be announced at an award presentation and closing ceremony on 25 June.
Officiating at the ceremony were Ms Carmen Ng, Head of Consumer Education Division of Consumer Council; Ms Betty Lee, Project Officer of Career Guidance Section from Education Bureau; Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning), HKBU; Mr Yeung Chee-kong, Associate Vice-President (Engagement), HKBU; and Dr Henry Fock, Head of the Department of Marketing, School of Business, HKBU.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Henry Fock said that the contest not only provides basic marketing knowledge to students, but also serves as a platform for young people to show their care for the community. He added that the Department of Marketing of HKBU has always placed an emphasis on the promotion of corporate social responsibility, which explains perfectly this year’s chosen contest theme on “socially responsible consumption”. Organisers hope to encourage members of the public to join hands in building a sustainable community.
Following the ceremony, Mr Howard Ling, Chief Consultant of The Hong Kong Council of Social Service, and Dr Shirley Cheng, Assistant Professor of the Department of Marketing, School of Business, HKBU, were invited to share their insights on the concept of marketing basics and socially responsible consumption.
