23 Nov 2016

HKBU has awarded scholarships to eight former or current members of Hong Kong sports teams with excellent performances in the 2016-17 academic year. The awardees, four receiving full-tuition scholarships and the other four receiving half scholarships, are now studying the bachelor programme of Physical Education and Recreation Management (PERM). The Department of Physical Education held a ceremony on 21 November to present scholarships to the awardees.

This year’s awardees under the Elite Athletes Admission Scheme (EAAS) include Chan Ho-ling (Squash), Chan Ho-yuen (Para Badminton), Lau Tsz-wing (Wu Shu) and Sin Chung-yee (Football) who are now studying their PERM Year 1. Meanwhile Fu Wai-ki (Poomsae and Sparring), Leung Shing-ho (Karatedo), Tam Yu-ching (Rugby) and Wong Hung-yan (Rhythmic Gymnastics) are studying in Year 3.

The presentation ceremony was officiated by Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning), and Professor Adrian Bailey, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences cum Chairman of the Faculty’s scholarship selection committee. At the ceremony, Dr Chau said that HKBU is committed to upholding whole person education which places a high priority on enhancing students’ capabilities and standards in academic studies, social services, leadership and personal morality. The establishment of the EAAS is one of the University’s new initiatives to achieve this mission. The Scheme not only supports elite athletes in pursuing degree programmes, but also encourages them to contribute to society by promoting a healthy lifestyle and advancing the sports culture in the community.

Professor Chung Pak-kwong, Head of the Department of Physical Education, said that the Department offers a variety of opportunities to talented youngsters, including elite athletes for pursuing their university education. The athletes also receive various types of support from the Department to meet their needs, so that they can strike a good balance between training, competing and studying. He added that this year, the awarded athletes specialise in a variety of sports and come from different educational backgrounds, thus instilling new elements into HKBU’s learning environment and helping to broaden students’ vision.

EAAS awards scholarships to between 10 and 20 elite athletes and accepts undergraduate student applications through the JUPAS and Non-JUPAS admission schemes. Athletes are required to meet the minimum entry requirements of HKBU and should be members of HKSAR sports teams with outstanding performances in the Olympics or Asian games. Retired athletes of HKSAR sports teams who have achieved outstanding results in international sports events are also eligible to apply. Selected athletes can study degree programmes offered by HKBU and are not limited to physical education programmes.
