The University held its 60th Anniversary Gala Concert last night (10 November 2016) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. The HKBU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Professor Johnny Poon, Head of the Department of Music, performed with world-renowned violinist Ms Anne Akiko Meyers. Also performed on the occasion were Miss Zhou Ni (soprano), Miss Zhao Kehan (mezzo-soprano), Mr Xu Yang (tenor), Mr Yu Yunlong (baritone), the Cantoria Hong Kong, the HKBU Choir and the HKBU Women’s Chorus.
The concert programme included Mikhail Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila, Felix Mendelssohn’s violin concerto in E minor, Op 64, Joyce Tang’s in time of daffodils (world premiere) and Beethoven’s Symphony No 9 in D minor, Op 125, Ode to Joy.
Anne Akiko Meyers is known for her passionate performances, purity of sound, deeply poetic interpretations, innovative programming and commitment to commissioning new works. She has actively maintained an extensive touring schedule for three decades and was the top-selling traditional classical instrumental soloist on Billboard charts in 2014. Regularly performing as guest soloist with many of the world’s top orchestras and in recital, she is a best-selling recording artist who has released 34 albums. She was recently awarded “The Luminary Award” for her support of the Pasadena Symphony.
