HKBU greets six international writers for one-month residency

Six international writers commenced their one-month stay in HKBU for cross-cultural literary exchange with members of the University community, the local literary circles as well as the general public.

The visiting writers in this year’s International Writers’ Workshop (IWW) are Professor Brian Kim Stefans (poet, USA), Ms Asma Nadia (novelist and nonfiction writer, Indonesia), Ms Minna Salami (non-fiction writer, Nigerian-Finnish), Ms Müesser Yeníay (poet, Turkey), Mr King Ban-hui (writer and painter, Malaysian-Chinese) and Ms Lin Bai (novelist, Mainland China). During their stay they will discuss and share their ideas on this year’s theme which is “The Written World”.

HKBU held a welcome reception for the writers yesterday (31 October) in which Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chen Zhi, Acting Dean of Arts, Professor Kathleen Ahrens, Director of IWW, and members of the University and the local cultural community greeted the writers. On the occasion, the writers read excerpts from their creative works and donated their publications to the University Library.

A series of public activities have been organised for the writers to share with the general public. These include a Public Recital (2 November, 8 pm, Fringe Club, Central), a Public Talk on “Mind your Ps and Qs: World News and World Views” (3 November, 3 pm, RRS 905, Sir Run Run Shaw Building, Ho Sin Hang Campus), a Chinese Writing Workshop (4 November, 6:30 pm, HKBU Campus), a Chinese Public Talk on “Sinophone Literature in the World” (5 November, 2:30 pm, Hong Kong Central Library, Causeway Bay), an On Campus Chinese Public Talk (7 November, 3 pm, OEE601, Oen Hall, Ho Sin Hang Campus), For reservations, please call 3411 7173.

HKBU launched the IWW in 2004, the first workshop of its kind in Asia. With a specific theme each year, the Workshop encourages and enhances literary creativity within the University community as well as in Hong Kong. It also introduces writers from around the globe to Hong Kong life and culture.
