While celebrating the HKBU 60th anniversary this year, the Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) reached an exciting period of development in its own right. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of AVA, a group of Visual Arts alumni led by Ms Sabrina Kam curated the “SHIFT: AVA 10th Anniversary Exhibition” revolving around the theme “space”. Art work created by 15 Visual Arts alumni are on display, showing the development of AVA and its future direction.

The curator introduced a new concept through the exhibition – “total space”, a perspective that is composed of three concepts of space which allows the possibility of interpreting and critiquing art from different periods of time and cultures, and narrows the gap between an insider’s perspective and that of an outsider.

Ms Kam said the exhibition aims to offer the audience a new approach to interpreting art from a macro perspective, further promoting “interdisciplinary study and cooperation”. Over the past 10 years, AVA has been developing this teaching approach, and in the next 10 years, the Academy hopes to explore many more possibilities.
