Visual Arts publication wins Red Dot Award 2016: Communication Design

HKBU publication "A Living Space" wins the Red Dot Award 2016 in the Communication Design category.

A Living Space, a book published by kaitak, the Centre of Research and Developments, Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) of HKBU was crowned one of the winners of the Red Dot Award 2016 (Communication Design category), chosen from thousands of entries from 46 countries.

 

The book by AVA lecturer Ms Wong Suk-ki was produced as part of the “Through Our Eyes” photography education programme executed by the Centre of Research and Developments of AVA. Ms Wong explored the well preserved Hakka Village by chance when she was wandering around Pak Sha O, Hoi Ha in Sai Kung area one time. She then formed a creative team, and identified former and current residents of Pak Sha O to interview them and put their stories onto paper.


Ms Wong said: “The development of the book concept began four years ago. At the time, I hoped to produce a book readers would find moving and get them to rethink their daily life, their family and sense of place. Special thanks to the people I worked with, including book designer and Visual Arts alumna Ms Somely So; members of the production team and Visual Arts alumni Mr Hsu Wai-lun and Mr Matthew Kwan; and  HKBU colleagues Ms Ruth Cheung and Ms Phoebe Fan who unflinchingly shared my burdens. They have helped launch this book which reveals a primal view of ‘living space’. Life may not be perfect but I hope the award will bring humanity back and revive affection for the land.” In addition, Ms Wong expressed her gratitude to The Robert Ho Family Foundation for their generous support.
