Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) organised a gala dinner yesterday evening (4 October) to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Over 2,000 guests, including government officials, consuls-general, heads of institutions, HKBU Council and Court members, alumni, staff, students, supporters and friends were in attendance.

Officiated by the Honourable Leung Chun-ying, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Chancellor of HKBU, the occasion marked a climax of HKBU’s diamond jubilee celebrations. Mr Leung praised HKBU for creating a number of “firsts” including Hong Kong’s first full-time Chinese Medicine and Chinese Medicine Pharmacy undergraduate programmes, adding that the HKSAR Government has been inspired to provide immense support towards the development of Chinese Medicine in Hong Kong.

In his remarks, Mr Cheng Yan-kee, Chairman of the Council and the Court said the HKBU 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner is a culmination of the University’s year-long celebration in 2016, which has been crucial in fostering a stronger sense of community, and in connecting and re-connecting with friends and family members of HKBU. He said over the past 60 years, the University has contributed immensely to social progress, through nurturing future leaders, enhancing the education sector and developing innovations for industry.

Witnessing the growth of HKBU, Mr Cheng said that the University has continued to focus on creating value in spite of continual profound changes and re-invention over the years. He also expressed his sincere gratitude to former Council Chairmen Dr Lau Wah-sum, Dr Moses Cheng and Dr Wilfred Wong, and three former HKBU President and Vice-Chancellors Dr Daniel Tse, Professor Ng Ching-fai, Professor Albert Chan and the current President Professor Roland Chin. Each of them represents different eras of HKBU’s development and accomplishment. Looking forward to the future, Mr Cheng said the HKBU motto of faith and perseverance (篤信力行) will continue to motivate the HKBU community to take the University to new heights.

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Roland Chin listed out three personalities, which he calls the DNAs of HKBU, that are essential to the University’s success. The first is care and compassion, demonstrated through a number of HKBU projects such as the provision of healthcare services including professional Chinese medicine healthcare treatments as well as community-engagement projects. Secondly, HKBU’s creativity as reflected by a number of “firsts” to drive social progress, and creativity in teaching and research for the betterment of the world. Thirdly, HKBU has a global outlook, pioneering many internationalisation programmes and initiatives. Professor Chin said the HKBU community will work together towards its aspiration to be a leading research-led liberal arts university.
