The School of Business welcomed 68 outstanding undergraduates, postgraduates and graduates at its 6th Induction Ceremony of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma Society (BGS) last Wednesday (18 May). At the ceremony, Dr Michael Chan Yue-kwong, Director and former Chairman of Café de Coral Holdings Limited, was conferred the Beta Gamma Sigma Honoree Award in honour of his significant accomplishments in both the business sector and the community.

In his welcoming remarks, Professor Edward Snape, Dean of the School of Business, said that the School has received two reaccreditations respectively this year by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) in recognition of its strong commitment to providing excellent teaching quality and its ethos of whole person education.

Professor Snape reiterated that the aim of establishing the BGS Chapter at HKBU was to recognise the outstanding academic achievement of students, and to encourage them to strengthen their career development through the vast global network of BGS. He praised Dr Michael Chan for his contributions to the business sector and the community, and said: “We are honoured to confer the Chapter Honoree title on Dr Michael Chan for his exceptional performance in the commercial sector and for his attributes which are of high value to BGS.”

Dr Michael Chan is currently a member of the advisory committee of HKBU School of Business, Honorary Chairman of the Hong Kong Institutes of Marketing and Legacy Academy, and Chairman of the Business Enterprise Management Centre of the Hong Kong Management Association. He said: “In the business world, the underlying commitment to change is the driving force in the constant search for excellence. There are 3Cs in life: choices, chances, and change. One must make a choice, to take a chance, and change things in life.”

Established in 1913 in the US, BGS is a world-renowned business society accredited by AACSB which invites outstanding business schools to establish collegiate chapters. BGS now has more than 750,000 members in over 160 countries and regions. After receiving the AACSB accreditation in 2010, the School of Business established the HKBU Chapter.
