HKBU hosts documentary competition to promote local organic farming

The Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre and the Academy of Film, School of Communication of HKBU jointly organised the 2016 Organic Farmers Documentary Competition which enabled participants from local tertiary institutions to record and narrate the stories of organic farmers who cultivate organic food in Hong Kong. The aim of the competition was to reflect the current mode of development in modern society and explore the relationship between human beings and nature in the city.

There were six shortlisted entries. The film Blessed produced by a team of HKU and LU students won the Gold Award. A Type of People – Tsang Tak Ping produced by a team formed by CityU and HKBU students won the Silver Award. In addition, The Farmer Whisper produced by a team of CityU, HKBU and LU students won The Most “Liked” Award for receiving 853 “likes”, the highest number of votes recorded on social media.

The film screening and award presentation ceremony was held on 20 May. The jury panel included Ms Jessey Tsang, humanities film director; Mr Lee Lik-chi, experienced film director; Mr Chen Yimin, Senior Lecturer of the Academy of Film, School of Communication of HKBU and Professor Jonathan Wong, Director of Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre of HKBU.

Members of the panel appreciated the participants’ expression of their passion for organic farming through filming. The jury also said that they look forward to seeing the participants promote the values of local organic farming to classmates, family members and friends. By influencing others so that they too will recognise the value of organic farming, the students can help promote a sustainable mode of development in the city and cultivate an ecologically balanced environment for living.
