HKBU launched the Elite Athletes Admission Scheme (EAAS) today which aims to encourage and support elite athletes to pursue degree programmes. Selected athletes can study degree programmes offered by HKBU, not limited to physical education courses, that suit their interests and will be awarded scholarships to cover half or full tuition fees. They will also act as sports ambassadors to promote sports culture and healthy lifestyle on campus and in the community.

EAAS will soon begin accepting undergraduate student applications for the 2016-17 academic year through JUPAS and Non-JUPAS admission scheme. Athletes are required to meet the minimum entry requirements of HKBU and should be members of HKSAR sports teams with outstanding performances in Olympics Games or Asian Games. Retired athletes of HKSAR sports teams who have achieved outstanding results in international sports competitions are also eligible to apply.

Full- or half-tuition scholarships (HK$21,050 or HK$42,100) will be awarded to 10 to 20 elite athletes, with the amount depending on their current or most recent sporting achievements. In addition, the awardees can continue receiving the scholarship from HKBU until their graduation if they achieve the minimum academic standard each year, set at cumulative GPA 2.3.

As HKBU hopes to promote sports culture among the community through EAAS, the awardees will act as sports ambassadors, giving talks and sports demonstrations on campus, in schools, and the wider community.

Professor Chung Pak-kwong, Head of the Department of Physical Education, said that HKBU is committed to advancing whole person education which emphasises a readiness to serve, leading and working in a team and pursuing a healthy lifestyle. EAAS is one of the University’s new initiatives to achieve this mission. HKBU, as one of the few universities that offers physical education as an undergraduate major, is excited to provide more opportunities for elite athletes to pursue tertiary studies and help them strike a better balance between studies and sports development, and contribute to society.
