The Hong Kong Baptist University Global Youth Summit 2016 was held on 5 and 6 March on campus and at the Solar Tower Camp in Ma Wan to raise tertiary students’ awareness towards the global refugee crisis and to strengthen their sense of identity as responsible global citizens.
Organised by the Office of Student Affairs with the theme “Prison Break – Leave to live”, the event attracted around 100 participants from local and non-local institutions, including Heng Seng Management College, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College and The University of Macau.
Mrs Cheung-Ang Siew Mei, Executive Director of Christian Action, and Ms Cheung Chui-yung, an experienced journalist, were the keynote speakers. They shared their experiences on helping refugees and reporting about refugee issues.
Followed by “Living Library”, four refugees or asylum seekers shared their stories with the participants. In the simulation game, participants experienced a realistic journey similar to the ones refugees undertake in order to gain an understanding of what they would have encountered in their native land, the process of leaving the homeland and searching for shelter.
Lastly, participants actively shared their thoughts on refugee issues during the sharing session and wrote encouraging words to refugees on postcards to show their care and concern.
