Students from the School of Continuing Education (SCE) got the best ever results in the Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition (Student Group). In addition to Betsy Chan Mei-lan from the Certificate in Jewellery Design and Production programme, who captured the championship with her necklace entitled “Hand in Hand”, and her classmates Tam Wing-chi and Pang Lai-suen, who both won merit awards with their ring and bracelet entitled “Dwelling” and “Balance of Tai Chi” respectively, five other students were also made finalists.
To reflect the “Harmony” theme of this year’s contest, Betsy used leather and figurines made of zircons and various coloured precious metals to represent people of different races, religions and backgrounds joining hands to create a better future.
The competition was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Hong Kong Jewellers' & Goldsmiths' Association, Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association, Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers' Association and Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China. Entries of the Open Group and Student Group were evaluated based on creativity and innovation, aesthetics, craftsmanship and wearability and relevance to the theme. The winning pieces were displayed in the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show.
