HKBU held a tea reception for University admission scholarship recipients last Tuesday (12 January), welcoming 76 attending students from Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and overseas who were awarded the University admission scholarship for this academic year.

Officiating at the tea reception were Mr Cheng Yan-kee, Chairman of the HKBU Council, Mrs Doreen Chan, Treasurer of the HKBU Council, and Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor. On the occasion, three scholarship recipients were invited to share about their life and experiences on campus.

This academic year, a total of 86 students were presented with the admission scholarship. To maintain the University’s competitiveness and to attract more outstanding students from around the world to study at HKBU, the University began offering admission scholarships to mainland and overseas students in the academic year 2006-2007 and 2009-2010 respectively. To date, a total of 312 students from Malaysia, Myanmar, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland have been awarded the University admission scholarship, amounting to approximately HK$93 million.

In addition, HKBU also puts an emphasis on attracting and rewarding high-calibre local students to study at the University. With the joint support of the University Strategic Development Fund as well as the various Schools and Faculties, the first University admission scholarship for local students was established in 2012-2013. In the past three years, a total of 15 outstanding Year One local students were admitted to the University through the admission scholarship. The scholarship scheme will be further extended to Year Three senior entrants starting from the next academic year.
