The Asian Energy Studies Centre (AESC) of HKBU together with the Department of Geography organised a series of energy-related events with an aim of bringing the latest research insights and solutions in a move towards a sustainable energy future for Asia, including Hong Kong.

The inaugural event, “The First Asian Energy Conference: Smart Grids, Sustainability Transition, and Innovation in Governance” was held recently to provide a platform for academics to share new policy and governance practices of smart grid development from Asian perspectives.

Keynote speakers included Professor Rikiya Abe from the University of Tokyo and Dr Alice Siu from the Center for Deliberative Democracy at Stanford University. Other speakers included scholars and practitioners from North America, Europe and Asia, including Hong Kong. About 50 representatives from utility companies, businesses, academia and non-governmental organisations participated in various sessions of the Conference. During the event, participants explored opportunities and areas of collaboration and developed potential research plans.

A series of energy research seminars were arranged where speakers from the US, South Korea, and the Netherlands presented various energy topics, ranging from wind energy, nuclear power, to domestic energy consumption. The purpose of the seminar series is to facilitate discussion and idea exchange among different stakeholders to promote a sustainable energy future in Asia.
