Visual Arts students’ wearable work featured at exhibition in Australia

The aesthetically designed outfit on the model looks like an ordinary dress, yet it can be transformed into a tent (left) that provides shelter.

A wearable artwork of three students from the Academy of Visual Arts is now on display in an exhibition entitled “Wear Next” at a leading gallery in Queensland, Australia. The artwork was also highlighted in the Australian magazine U On Sunday on 4 October 2015.

Year three students Stacey Chan, Doris Li and Lamothy Kwok produced a dress which can be transformed into a tent. Their creation entitled Without Fear - The Umbrella Movement was designed with protesters of last year’s “occupy movement” in mind. The aesthetic and functional dress stands out for its ability to transform and the co-curator of the exhibition described it as “a James Bond kind of dress”.

The students said that the dress is not only an outfit, but also designed to keep the protesters safe. The back of the garment conceals a folded umbrella, designed like a protective shelter. Made with waterproof fabric, the dress can be transformed into a shelter – a tent – that enables the wearer to rest.

The “Wear Next” exhibition is on display until 7 November at the Artisan Gallery, Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, Queensland, Australia.
