Professor Niklaus Wirth, the 1984 Turing Award Laureate, was invited to share his insights on “Computers and Computing in the Early Years” in a public lecture held on 23 January, as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series organised by the Department of Computer Science. Around 120 participants including students and teachers from tertiary institutions and secondary schools, the HKBU community and the general public attended the lecture which aims to strengthen the public’s interest and understanding of the subject.
Professor Wirth shared his views on three milestones in the history of computers: first, in terms of hardware and software, he elaborated on the computer and computing development of the early years, starting from the 1960s. Secondly, he illustrated the evolution of computers in recent years with regard to computer capability and connectivity brought about by the Internet. Last but not least, he remarked on how the application explosion and ever-growing demands of consumers pose challenges for programming engineers, impelling them to go beyond limits to keep up the quality in software design.
The Distinguished Lecture Series was sponsored by Dr Chiu Chun-bong, Honorary Trustee of the HKBU Foundation.
