Professor Cheung Yiu-ming, Professor of the Department of Computer Science, and PhD student Gu Fangqing, won the Best Paper award for their coauthored paper entitled "A Direct Search Algorithm based on Kernel Density Estimator for Nonlinear Optimization" at the joint conference of the 10th International Conference on Natural Computation and the 11th International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery, held recently in Xiamen, China.

The paper was selected from among more than 1,100 submissions. In the paper, the authors proposed a direct search algorithm to solve nonlinear optimization problems. Optimization problems are widely applied in disparate fields from resource scheduling in economics to network planning in engineering.
