20 May 2014

With good negotiation skills and artistic talent, HKBU students won 10 awards at the Hong Kong Model European Union 2014 (MKMEU) and the design competition of the EU-HK Intellectual Property Series 2013 organised by the European Union Academic Programme Hong Kong (EUAP).

In April, EUAP and the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao organised the HKMEU 2014, a simulation of the spring session of the European Council, which attracted more than 40 participants from HKBU, The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. With “Cyber Security Strategy” as the theme, students represented different European Union member states to discuss cooperation between European Union members and the creation of national network and information security strategies.

HKBU students clinched six awards at the competition. Harry Zhao (Social Sciences, Year 1) and Kyle Gillis (Exchange student, Year 2) won the Best Delegation Award (Group). Joe Cai (Religion and Philosophy, Year 2) and Felix Tin (Social Sciences, Year 1) each captured a Best Delegate Award (Individual). Jia Yanqing (Finance, Year 3) and Evelyne Vu (Exchange student, Year 3) were each awarded an Honorable Recognition prize. Hao Yun (Government and International Studies, Year 2) gained the Best Position Paper Award. All the winners are entitled to join the EUAP summer programme in Brussels, Belgium, in June.

In addition, EUAP and the European Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong held an EU-HK Intellectual Property Series 2013 to raise awareness of the need to protect the ownership of innovative ideas and products and to address the potentially damaging socio-economic consequences of intellectual property rights infringement. The design competition of the Series featured competitions in mascot design, visual arts design and short film production. The activity attracted competitors from HKBU, City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Design Institute.

HKBU students scooped the top three prizes in the mascot design competition. “The Sun” designed by Kenneth Szeto (Visual Arts, Year 2) beat more than 100 entries to win the championship in the mascot design competition. The first and second runners-up went to Lin Ling (Visual Arts, Year 2) and Chow Chun-yat (Visual Arts, Year 2) respectively. In addition, the team formed by Lu Jiaxi, Kwok Ming-hei, Zhang Yatao, Shao Junchao, Chen Shijun, Wong Lai-wa, Zhang Zhuoling, Liufang Yiyi, Guan Xiang (Cinema and Television, Year 2) and Zhu Qimeng (Cinema and Television, Year 3) snatched a first runner-up prize in the short film competition.
