Nine international speakers offered creative solutions and valuable advice to Hong Kong youth in breaking through difficulties at the first TEDxHKBU talk held last Saturday (29 March) on campus.
The event, initiated by students and co-organised and sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs, attracted an audience of around 200. With the theme “David and Golliath”, which illustrated the idea of “surprising strength”, the speakers explored how a seemingly small individual could fight against the enormous social machine.
The nine speakers were Mr Chen Zhou, a renowned motivator from the Mainland; Dr Christina Dean, founder and CEO of Redress; Ms Pearl Tse, founder of Togetherness; Ms Prudence Mak, creator of Chocolate Rain; Mr Silvain Gilbert, a Jewish holocaust survivor; Mr Ng Siu-hung, partner of Metta Communications; Mr Kao Chia-liang, co-founder of g0v.tw; Mr David Yeung, co-founder of Green Monday; and Mr Wilson Cheung, the world’s first Asian polar expedition guide.
Professor Albert Lee, Director of Student Affairs, commended the organising committee, which included current students, graduates and friends from abroad, for their united effort in staging the event in only four months’ time. He said: “Education is not only the transfer of knowledge, but it should unleash the youngsters’ potential, and help them realise their dreams. The TEDxHKBU talk has such an impact because each speaker has a story that touches our hearts, inspires our thinking and provokes us to stay true to our values courageously.”
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost any topic in more than 100 languages.
