The University celebrated the fifth anniversary of the HKBU Foundation at a Thanksgiving Reception yesterday (27 February). It also took the opportunity to express its heartfelt appreciation to around 100 Board of Governors, Foundation members and friends of the University who attended the reception for their ardent support towards the Foundation. Professor Albert Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor, also announced that he was making a personal donation of HK$1 million for the University's long-term development. He has donated a total of HK$2.75 million to HKBU since he took office as President and Vice-Chancellor in mid-2010.
In his speech, Dr. Wilfred Wong, Chairman of the HKBU Foundation, thanked Professor Albert Chan for his generosity. He said: “Under the sixth round of the Matching Grant Scheme, HKBU will continue its endeavours to expand the scope of fundraising so as to support a variety of new teaching and research projects. It is so encouraging that the donations we have received as of today far exceed the amount we raised in the previous round." Dr. Wong said the scale of HKBU Foundation has grown greatly, with the number of members more than doubling in five years, from 133 members at its establishment to 404 members currently. He specially thanked the Board of Governors, members of the Entrepreneur Committee and Alumni Committee for their concerted efforts in assisting the University in enhancing its fundraising power and broadening its social network.
In his speech, Professor Albert Chan updated those present on the University’s development, including the establishment of the territory’s first Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology, the opening of the Changshu Research Institute and the Haimen Institute of Science and Technology, and the approval granted by the State Ministry of Science and Technology for the setting up of the Partner State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis.
Professor Chan also reaffirmed the University’s determination to acquire the former Lee Wai Lee campus site and said the University would continue to liaise with the Government on allocating that site for the University’s long-term development including building student hostels and a Chinese Medicine Teaching Hospital. In addition, he presented a couplet at the reception to express his sincere gratitude to the Foundation Board members and donors for their support.
Dr. Wilfred Wong and Professor Albert Chan also presented certificates to a total of 11 of the Foundation’s Honorary Vice-Presidents, Honorary Directors and Directors at the reception to express the University’s gratitude for their generosity.
To help address the University’s long-term development needs, the HKBU Foundation was established in early 2009 with a view to extending the support base of HKBU and acquiring more funding resources for the University to help increase its prominence internationally as a premier institution of higher learning.
