Initiated by HKBU, the first green voluntary team among local tertiary institutions – BU GreenieS (BUGS) – was officially established in September 2013. The kick-off ceremony for BUGS was held yesterday (24 September). The Hon. Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment, Mr Andy Lee, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary, Dr Chung Shan-shan, Convenor of the Task Force on Sustainable Campus, and Miss Karene Mak, a popular singer, officiated at the ceremony by lighting up the BUGS logo with energy-generating “E-Gen bikes”.
Mr Lee said, “Since the launch of the ‘Sustainable Low Carbon Campus’ project in 2009, HKBU has achieved excellent results in building a low carbon culture and awareness in the University community. We now further extend this initiative off campus by setting up the first green voluntary team among local tertiary educational institutions. More than 250 students, staff and alumni have joined the voluntary team. However, we will not be satisfied with this achievement. I encourage every University member to spread the green culture to your friends and families, and together we can build a stronger green team."
The Hon. Wong said, “University plays an important role in one’s life. Apart from classroom learning, learning from extra-curricular activities also counts. Therefore, it is very meaningful for HKBU to establish this green voluntary team today. I look forward to seeing more young people actively participating in green voluntary work, along with carbon reduction in your daily lives.”
A low carbon concert was held after the ceremony, performers included alumnus Karene Mak and BUS Groove, an eco-percussion group.
