HKBU will confer Honorary University Fellowships (HUF) on six distinguished persons at its 58th Convocation on 10 September 2013 (Tuesday) in recognition of their significant contributions to society and in appreciation of their highly valued support to the University.
The HUF recipients are Ms. Barbara Fei Ming-yi, Mr. Raymond Kwok Ka-sing, Mr. Allan Kwong Hing-chuen, Mr. William Leung Wing-cheung, Mr. So Chung-ping and Mr. So Wing-kin.
Ms. Barbara Fei Ming-yi
Ms. Barbara Fei is a renowned world-class musician. She has made distinguished contributions to the development of music in Hong Kong and on the Mainland, and her support to music education and the development of the music curriculum in HKBU has been invaluable. She was recently invited to serve as a Member of the Accreditation Panel for the implementation of the four-year curriculum of HKBU’s Music programme under the new academic structure.
Ms. Fei has participated actively in public service. She is Chairman of the Music Committee of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Music Director and Conductor of Allegro Singers, Chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Choral Societies, Honorary Research Fellow of the Centre of Asian Studies of The University of Hong Kong, Chairman of the Hong Kong Ethnomusicology Society, Music Director and Conductor of the Hong Kong Chinese Oratorio Society and Senior Advisor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.
She was appointed as a Member of the National Committee of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and Honorary Committee Member in 2006 and 2011 respectively. She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and The Hong Kong Institute of Education in 2008 and 2010 respectively. She was granted the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2001 and Silver Bauhinia Star in 2012 by the HKSAR Government. She was selected as one of the “Hong Kong Women of Excellence in the Six Arts” by the Hong Kong Federation of Women this year.
Ms. Fei founded Allegro Singers and was invited on many occasions to perform in the US, New Zealand and cities around Asia. She was the first Hong Kong artist to be invited by the Chinese Musicians Association to perform in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and she also performed with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Fei has made possible the production of two Chinese contemporary works in Hong Kong -- Sweet Maiden and The One Hundredth Bride -- in both of which she acted as producer as well as principal actress.
Mr. Raymond Kwok Ka-sing
Mr. Raymond Kwok is Director of Eagle Wide Limited, Gearing Development Limited and Ocean Holiday Limited. He also serves as Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation.
Mr. Kwok is a leading advocate for the whole person development of young people in Hong Kong. His generous support to the University for its development of whole person education is highly recognised. Mr. Kwok and his brothers, in the name of the Kwok Chung Bo Fun Charitable Fund, made a generous donation to the University to establish the Mr. Kwok Yat-wai and Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun Graduate School Development Fund and the Faith‧Hope‧Love Endowment Fund to support HKBU’s student character development programmes. Last year, Mr. Kwok made an additional donation in support of the Character Development Fund. This year, in the name of the Kwok Chung Bo Fun Charitable Fund, he pledged to make an annual donation for the University’s student exchange programme and further donated to support the development of the School of Chinese Medicine.
Mr. Kwok, in the name of Eagle Wide Limited, together with the Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service -- Hong Kong, has invested in a project entitled “When Teens Meet Angels”. It provides support to young mothers to enable them to earn their own living, embracing social inclusion. The project created synergies among social workers, business leaders and community groups. His significant contributions to philanthropic activities earned him the award of Distinguished Volunteer by the Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service -- Hong Kong. Through his family foundation, Mr. Kwok has also been supportive to the Breakthrough Youth Development Programmes and Media Ministries.
Mr. Allan Kwong Hing-chuen
A global leader in the trading, logistics and manufacturing sector, Mr. Allan Kwong is President and Chief Executive of Regal Holdings Corporation and Honorary President of the HKBU Foundation.
Mr. Kwong is passionate about supporting the higher education sector and the community. He has provided steadfast support to HKBU’s academic research and development. He made a donation of HK$1 million to support research and development in the area of food safety and analysis in 2007. In 2010, he made a donation of HK$1 million designated for a project on organic LED for solid state lighting under the Centre for Advanced Luminescence Materials. In the name of Regal Holdings Corporation, Mr. Kwong supported the University’s Golf Day as the Title Sponsor with a total donation of HK$1.4 million.
Since last year, Mr. Kwong has served as Vice-Chairman of the HKBU Golf Day Organising Committee. He continues to serve the community through various posts including Associate of Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Science of the University of Southern California; Member of the Board of Visitors of Seaver College of Pepperdine University, Vice President of the Xiqu Chamber of Commerce in Zhongshan, Honorary Trustee of the Xiqu Primary School in Zhongshan, and Consultant for the Bel Canto Chorus.
Mr. Kwong emphasises the importance of innovation. In the 80s, he helped develop an international trade platform enhancing effective coordination between customers and their suppliers which is still in use by most global players today. In the mid-80s, he designed an inventory control programme reducing costs effectively and minimising stock risks which fulfilled customers’ needs. In addition, he devised product mix and promotional schemes which significantly increased profit margins and sales.
Mr. William Leung Wing-cheung
Mr. William Leung is Executive Director and Group Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Sun Hung Kai and Co. Ltd, Chief Executive Officer of Sun Hung Kai Financial Ltd and Honorary Vice-President of the HKBU Foundation. After receiving a Diploma in English Language and Literature from Hong Kong Baptist College, Mr. Leung gained extensive management experience in the finance and banking sector, holding key positions in major financial institutions in Hong Kong and Australia, including American Express, Standard Chartered Bank, Visa International, and MasterCard International. Mr. Leung joined Hang Seng Bank and was promoted from Assistant General Manager to Executive Director and Head of Personal Banking. In recognition of his accomplishments in the field, Mr. Leung was elected Honorary Certified Financial Management Planner of The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers in 2006.
Mr. Leung has used his remarkable management experience to enhance the financial stability and cultural vitality of the University. He was appointed as Treasurer to the University Council and Court in 2007. Over the term of six years, he worked closely with senior management to develop the University’s long-term financial strategy. Furthermore, he has served as Treasurer of the Board of Governors and Chairman of the Alumni Committee of the HKBU Foundation since its establishment in early 2009. In addition to inspiring the fundraising strategy of the Foundation, he introduced the Alumni Sharing Forum in 2011 to provide career guidance to graduating students and interested alumni. Mr. Leung continues to make donations to his alma mater in support of the University’s advancement, alumni activities as well as the development of sports activities. He serves regularly as chief referee for the University’s athletic competitions.
Mr. Leung has also contributed to the development of sports and cultural activities across Hong Kong. He was appointed by the HKSAR Government as a Member of the Hong Kong Sports Commission, as well as to serve on the Council of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts of which he is currently the Chairman. He also serves as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (an HKBU community project), and as a Member of the Public Engagement Committee of the West Kowloon Cultural District. Emblematic of his continuing commitment to the development of Hong Kong, Mr. Leung was appointed Justice of the Peace in 2005 and honoured with the Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2009 by the Government.
Mr. So Chung-ping
Mr. So Chung-ping is Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association, Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organisations, Vice-President of the Hong Kong Civic Association, Deputy Chairman of The Unified Association of Kowloon West, Founding President of the Lions Club of West Kowloon, and Honorary Superintendent of the Tongzhou District Welfare Hospital in Beijing. He has contributed enormously to the University’s development, in particular to the development of Chinese medicine teaching and clinical services.
Mr. So has devoted himself to community service for more than 40 years. He founded the Lions Club of West Kowloon which aims to help the underprivileged. Under his leadership, the Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association contributed to the medical welfare, education and service of senior citizens. Apart from building the Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association Activities Centre for the Elderly, the Association has made donations to the eight local universities to establish bursaries. It also supported the building of rural schools on the Mainland under Project Hope. The Association has made numerous donations to HKBU, including HK$200,000 to help outstanding students with financial needs and a total of HK$1 million to establish the Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association Scholarship for the School of Continuing Education of the University. In addition, it collaborated with the University to run a Chinese Medicine Specialty Centre.
In recognition of his public service, Mr. So received Community Services Awards from the Government in 1985 and 1986. He was conferred the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Community Service in 2000. In 2012, he received a Medal of Honour from the SAR Government. He is also recognised as Honorary Citizen of the Tongzhou District of Beijing. In 2012, he received an Honorary University Fellowship from the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong.
Mr. So Wing-kin
Mr. So Wing-kin is Managing Director of Glad Link Properties Limited. He graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering of Hong Kong Baptist College in 1979 and obtained a Master’s degree from the Department of Engineering at University of Sheffield in the UK in 1980.
Mr. So has always demonstrated great concern for the development of the University. He is an Honorary Trustee of the HKBU Foundation and Vice-Chairman of the Organising Committee of the HKBU Golf Day. He was a member of the HKBU Chaplain’s Office Committee. Mr. So has made numerous donations to the University amounting to a total of more than HK$2 million, contributing to the campus development, evangelism on campus, the Century Club and the Daniel and Kitty Tse Visiting Professorship Scheme.
Mr. So is an experienced engineer. He has consulted on several development projects in Hong Kong and overseas. He is a Chartered Engineer of the Engineering Council of the UK, a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers of the UK and a member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
He was a member of the Board of Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, the Hong Kong Policy Research Institute, the Conservancy Association, and the Building Committee of Redevelopment of Pooi To Middle School, and Director of China Real Estate Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong Chapter Limited. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Wenshan Institute of Yunnan, a member of The Hong Kong Chinese Christian Churches Union Committee, Director of Culture Regeneration Research Society and Advisor of Redevelopment of the Kowloon City Baptist Church.
