HKBU members honoured for dedicated contribution to society

Over the years, members of the HKBU community have been committed to contributing to society through the excellent performance of their professional roles and their dedication to community service. This year, ten HKBU members were honoured by the HKSAR Government for their distinguished service to the community.

Dr. Joseph Lee, Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors of the HKBU Foundation, and recipient of Honorary Degree of Doctor of Social Sciences in 2011, was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star for his great enthusiasm and dedication to public and community service in the past decades, particularly his signification contributions to charitable activities, social enterprises, educational service and youth development. Mr. Stephen Yau, recipient of an Honorary University Fellowship from HKBU in 2008 and alumnus of the Department of Social Work, and Ms. Wong Wai-ching, Honorary President of the HKBU Foundation and Member of the Entrepreneur Committee of the HKBU Foundation, were honoured with the Silver Bauhinia Star for their brilliant public and community service. Dr. Yip Wing-sie, alumna of the Department of Music, was recognised with the Bronze Bauhinia Star for her outstanding achievements in and valuable contribution to music development and promotion in Hong Kong.

In addition, Dr. Ian Chan, Permanent President and Ex-Officio Director of the Hong Kong Chiu Chow Chamber of Commerce, Honorary Vice-President of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the Medal of Honour for his valuable contribution to the promotion of academic and economic exchange between the Mainland and Hong Kong. Dr. Liu Hong-fai, Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation and Member of the Entrepreneur Committee of the HKBU Foundation, and Dr. Gordon Tsui, Member of the Alumni Committee of the HKBU Foundation, were appointed Justices of the Peace.

Three alumni were also recognised for their exceptional contribution and performance. Mr. Yip Kwong-fuk (Social Work) was awarded the Hong Kong ICAC Medal for Meritorious Service for his exemplary and devoted service to the ICAC for over 35 years. Mr. Chan Kam-yuen (Chinese Language and Literature) and Mr. Tang Fei (Postgraduate Diploma in Education), who are actively engaged in public service, were awarded the Medal of Honour. Mr. Chan was recognised for his contribution to the promotion of the well-being of persons with disabilities and of a barrier-free environment and Mr. Tang was honoured for his contribution to the education sector.
