Associate Professor Kenny K N Chow from the Department of Interactive Media at Hong Kong Baptist University will discuss his new book, "Expressive Iteration: Designing for Meaningful Routines." The book examines how iteration is an integral part of daily routines, such as sleep-wake cycles, commuting, workouts, chores, and practicing an instrument. While many iterations are monotonous, others can lead to progression or evolution. Chow explores how subtle variations in these repetitive acts can create meaning and forge narratives, making them significant.
Drawing on rhetoric, psychology, narratology, and design-thinking, Chow illustrates how we can innovate the design of mundane activities to give them expression and meaning. He examines examples from both Asian and European origins across various domains, including visual arts, literature, digital art, video games, and mobile applications. This exploration offers insights into transforming routine activities into meaningful experiences through thoughtful design.
