Abdul Gabbar Al-Sharafi is an Associate Professor of Translation Studies in the Department of English and Translation at Sultan Qaboos University, where he also serves as the Director of the MA program in Translation Studies. He earned his PhD in Linguistics from Durham University, UK, in 2000, and an MA in Translation Studies from the same institution in 1997. He joined Sultan Qaboos University in 2006.

Al-Sharafi’s research interests include translation studies, discourse analysis, rhetoric, and stylistics. His publications include a book titled Textual Metonymy: A Semiotic Approach, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2004. He has authored several articles on translation, communication, and discourse, which have appeared in reputable academic journals such as Babel, The Interpreter and Translator Trainer, and Translation Spaces, Informal Logic, among others. He has also published research on discourse analysis, particularly in the areas of risk and crisis communication, including studies on risk communication in Oman during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Al-Sharafi has served as a judge for the prestigious Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts, and Literature – Translation Division (2016), and for various translation competitions organized by the Literary Forum in Oman (2011, 2013), Petroleum Development Oman Translation Competition (2021), and the Cultural Club Translation Competition (2024). He is a member of the editorial boards of several local and international journals specializing in translation, literature, and the humanities, and serves as a reviewer for a number of academic journals in the fields of translation and discourse analysis.
