Sabri Gürses  (1972) is a writer, translator, and scholar. After publishing transfictional sci-fi novels (Boşvermişler, Sevişme), he studied Russian Philology at Istanbul University and earned his MA in Translation Studies there with a thesis on poetry translation and Nabokov’s work on Pushkin’s Eugenie Onegin. He completed his PhD at Erciyes University with a monograph on the Russian semiotician Yuri Lotman. In 2005, he launched Çeviribilim (“translation studies in Turkish), first as a magazine and later as a publishing house in Istanbul. Since then, he has been exploring the subject of plagiarism in translation and has actively struggled with it in coordination with CSOs. He has also taken part in national scientific projects for TÜBİTAK on translation plagiarism and translation technologies.

Gürses has translated many works from Russian and American literature and has received several awards for both his translations and his own literary writing. His translation of Andrei Bely’s Glossolalia won the Pushkin Prize in 2009, and his translation of Goncharov’s Oblomov received the Dünya Kitap - Translation of The Year Award in 2010. That same year, he was honored with the Young Voice Award of the Translation Association of Turkey. His translation of Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin was a finalist for the Read Russia (Читай Россию) Prize in 2018, and in 2020 he won the award with Tolstoy: Collected Works. He became one of the founders of Literary Translators Association (ÇEVBİR) and is a member of Translation Society of Turkey (ÇEVDER), European Language Council (CEL/ELC), International Dostoevsky Society and a regular visitor of The International Seminar for translators of the works by Leo Tolstoy and other Russian writers at Yasnaya Polyana.
